On June 23, 2024, the Parliament Reform Act was passed in Taiwan, granting the Legislative Yuan expanded investigative powers and making the President's annual address to the Legislative Yuan a regular occurrence with real-time question and answer sessions, which raised constitutional concerns. President Tsai Ing-wen announced that the recent amendments raised constitutional doubts and blurred the constitutional provisions on the separation of powers and checks and balances. Therefore, she, as the guardian of liberal democracy and constitutional government, declared plans to apply for a constitutional interpretation and temporary disposition from the Constitutional Court to uphold the constitutional order, safeguard people's basic rights, and ensure parliamentary reform is executed lawfully and constitutionally.
