President Tsai Ing-wen responded for the first time to the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) recent announcement on punishing advocates of Taiwan independence, including the possibility of the death penalty for severe cases. Tsai emphasized that democracy is not a crime but authoritarianism is, asserting that China has no right to impose sanctions on the Taiwanese people or pursue them across borders. Tsai called on China to acknowledge the existence of the Republic of China and engage in dialogue with Taiwan's legally elected government for the well-being of people on both sides. The CCP's actions have raised concerns internationally.
