On June 13, 2024, the Caregiver Association expressed concerns over potential impacts of exempting seniors aged 80 and over from the Barthel Index assessment for applying for foreign caregivers in Taiwan, urging that valuable long-term care resources should be prioritized for those in need. They pointed out that with the aging population and increasing demand for caregiving, prematurely hiring foreign caregivers could lead to a rapid decline in self-care abilities for the elderly. The Association recommended phased caregiving arrangements and emphasized the importance of not squandering resources, especially with an estimated 530,000 healthy individuals aged 80 and over potentially hiring foreign caregivers in the future.
