Taiwan Railway Recruits Insufficient Technicians, 64-Year-Old 'Newbie' Assigned to Hualien

Reported 8 months ago

Since the establishment of a corporation, Taiwan Railway's first recruitment fell short of expectations, especially in acquiring enough technical personnel, with a 64-year-old newcomer retiring soon after joining. The railway stated that the recruitment followed regulations. Originally planning to recruit 936 staff, only 756 were hired, with a shortage in technical staff. A recent case of an employee nearing the retirement age of 65 caused discussions, but as per labor laws, discrimination based on age is not permissible in hiring practices. It was confirmed that the employee in question, holding a Master's degree in electrical engineering, met all qualifications and passed the necessary tests. Currently, the employee has been assigned to the Hualien Electrical Division, with initial work tailored to accommodate their approaching retirement status.
