Taiwan Railways' train 229 (EMU3000 model Tze-Chiang Express) collided with a landslide on the western mainline in Hualien yesterday, causing the train to derail and injuring 9 people including the driver and passengers. The section between Heping and Chongde on the western mainline was impassable, but has been restored to allow traffic in both directions by noon today. The reason for the accident was a large landslide from the Daqing River below the tracks, overflowing onto the track. The train was suspected to have been hit by falling rocks, leading to emergency evacuation and repair operations following the incident.
