Taiwan Railways Takes 4 Major Improvement Measures After Train Derails from Colliding with Debris Flow, Considers Changing Route of North-Link Line

In response to the derailment of a new Taiwan Railways Express train on June 21st in the Hualien section caused by colliding with debris flow, Taiwan Railways Chairman Du Wei announced 4 major improvement measures. These measures include enhancing monitoring and warning systems, conducting river dredging, installing screens at accident sites, and setting up early warning systems for debris flow. Additionally, monitoring equipment will be prioritized on bridges with potential debris flow risks. Furthermore, Taiwan Railways plans to establish a special task force to study the possibility of route changes in the frequently affected Anding to Chongde section. The short-term improvement measures are estimated to cost around five million NT dollars and will be covered by Taiwan Railways' general funds, while larger projects will seek support from the Ministry of Transportation.
