Taiwan Railways Vice Station Master's High Salary Exposed, Provokes Online Backlash

Reported 7 months ago

A vice station master surnamed Qiu at Taiwan Railways Chiayi Station recently faced controversy for sharing a video on his personal YouTube channel depicting passengers violating regulations and posting a photo holding an airsoft gun, sparking criticism. After netizens uncovered his high seven-figure annual salary, Taiwan Railways promptly responded, clarifying that Qiu's actions on YouTube were personal. Following an incident where Qiu angrily shouted 'terminate the contract' at a female passenger, which was criticized as akin to public shaming, Taiwan Railways South Operations Committee issued Qiu two verbal warnings and urged him to improve his service attitude. With netizens mocking his salary, Qiu retorted on social media, challenging claims of a high salary and inviting the individual alleging it to provide evidence. Taiwan Railways explained that vice station masters, including Qiu, whose salary is reportedly over a million, are former public servants with fixed salaries that make up about 22.6% of their income, supplemented by non-fixed salaries based on schedules and job nature, such as retention allowances and danger pay. The company emphasized that salary details are private and cannot be disclosed.
