According to the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, Taiwan's median salary among 8.17 million workers is $518,000, but the number of people earning less than $3,000 a month remains high at 1.49 million. Kuomintang legislator Lai Shih-bao pointed out the widening income gap between the top 10% and bottom 10% in Taiwan, reaching 4.12 times, reflecting in issues such as declining marriage rates and low birth rates among young people. Lai expressed concerns that the worsening wealth disparity may intensify the sense of relative deprivation among the group earning less than $3,000 a month, ushering in a grim reality in Taiwan's income distribution.
