Taiwan's Agriculture Ministry Denies 'Everyone Drinks Fresh Milk' Project Squeezes Existing Soy Milk

Reported about 1 year ago

On July 7, 2024, it was reported that the upcoming zero import tariffs on liquid milk from New Zealand could greatly impact Taiwan's dairy industry. As a response, Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture and Education launched the 'Everyone Drinks Fresh Milk' project, providing domestically produced fresh milk to 1.35 million elementary school students starting in September. Despite concerns that this initiative could displace the existing soy milk program in schools, the Agriculture Ministry clarified that the fresh milk was additional and would not affect current soy milk procurement. Furthermore, measures have been taken to provide lactose-free fresh milk for lactose-intolerant students. With a budget of 44 billion for a four-year plan, this project aims to supplement students' diets and promote locally produced soy milk as well.
