Taiwan's DPP Urges Government to Negotiate Release of Taiwanese Fishing Boat Detained by Mainland China

Reported 12 months ago

A fishing boat from Penghu, the 'Great Advance 88,' was detained by two Chinese mainland coast guard ships while fishing in waters near Kinmen on the evening of July 2, and forcefully taken towards Weitou Port in China. The Democratic Progressive Party's spokesperson, Wu Zheng, hopes for dialogues between the governments to urge China to release the boat and crew as soon as possible. While the fishing boat was operating in waters near Fujian, which is outside Taiwan's jurisdiction and a potential violation of other country's regulations, media reports suggesting this incident as retaliation against President Lai Ching-te have sparked debate. Both the Mainland Affairs Council and the Coast Guard Administration have provided updates, calling for China to release the boat and crew through government negotiations.
