Kaohsiung has established Taiwan's first local health bureau 'Biological Tritium Analysis Laboratory', certified by the Ministry of Health and Welfare's Food and Drug Administration as the central designated testing agency. Concerns over radiation-contaminated seafood due to Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant releasing tritium waste water into the ocean have prompted the use of this laboratory for radiation safety monitoring of aquatic products. The laboratory not only tests samples from Kaohsiung but also assists multiple counties and cities in testing commercially available sampled foods. By utilizing advanced equipment and professional staff, the laboratory ensures strict testing for radioactive isotopes like iodine-131, cesium-134, and cesium-137 in food, providing valuable data for assessing the ecological and human consumption impacts following Japan's tritium water discharge.
