Taiwan's Fishing Boat Seized near Kinmen, Mainland Affairs Council Seeks Explanation

Reported 12 months ago

On July 3, 2024, another fishing boat dispute between the two sides erupted as the Penghu fishing boat 'Da Jin Man 88' was detained by mainland Chinese coast guards near Kinmen on the evening of July 2. The boat carried two Taiwanese and three Indonesian crew members suspected of illegal fishing and is currently being held by the Fujian coast guard. The Mainland Affairs Council stated they will seek an explanation from the mainland promptly to dispel unnecessary speculation. Mainland authorities claimed the boat violated seasonal fishing regulations, operated within a prohibited trawl fishing area using nets smaller than the minimum size stipulated by China, causing harm to marine resources and the environment. The boat also reportedly attempted to disrupt law enforcement operations, prompting warnings and expulsion by the coast guard. The Council aims to secure the safe release of the crew and vessel after clarifying the situation and procedures in accordance with relevant regulations. The incident took place in an area where fishermen from both sides traditionally operate, with Taiwan urging respect for its fishing rights. Security officials pointed out that the boat was operating in waters near Fujian, outside Taiwan's jurisdiction and during China's fishing moratorium, posing a risk of violating Chinese regulations.
