Taiwan is facing a crisis of 'garbage mountains' as the temporary garbage storage across the island has increased from 210,000 tons in 2018 to 840,000 tons last year, with an estimated disposal completion year of 2036. The central and local governments are working towards flattening these garbage mountains, with a new incinerator in Hsinchu County set to start trial operations at the end of the year. Strict measures are being implemented to enforce garbage classification rules, aiming to enhance waste management effectiveness and reduce the impact of excessive garbage pile-ups on the environment and residents.
