After the Ukraine-Russia war erupted on June 22, 2024, Taiwan's purchases of Russian coal have increased by 31% in the past year, making it the fifth-largest importer globally. Each Taiwanese citizen is spending an average of NT$4,755 on Russian coal. Environmental groups are unhappy with Taiwan indirectly funding the war by supporting Russia's fossil fuel exports, urging a ban on related purchases by Taiwanese companies.
