Taiwan is facing a significant decrease in its eligible male population for conscription, dropping below 100,000 for the first time, as a result of declining birth rates. The Ministry of the Interior (MOI) plans to tighten eligibility for Replacement Soldier Service by allowing only those caring for disabled direct relatives without support to apply. The Ministry of National Defense (MND) has lowered physical standards to address the shortage, driven by low birth rates and tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
