Taiwan's Representative to the US, Yu De-Lear, is accused of extravagantly spending public funds, attempting to purchase a $3.7 million luxury car which was rejected, and spending $8 million in six months on items like beds, carpets, sofas, and coffee machines. His wife also allegedly acted imperiously towards embassy staff. Yu De-Lear denied the accusations, stating that purchases of furniture and coffee machines were not true, and defended his request for a luxury car based on local customs in Washington, DC. He insisted on clearing his name and his wife's reputation from personal attacks, emphasizing any impact on his work should be referred to Taipei.
