Amid escalating tensions between Taiwan and China, with continued provocation from the Chinese military, a recent opinion article by American columnist Karishma Vaswani suggested that Taiwan should follow Australia's lead in allowing non-citizens to join the military to boost manpower. However, Taiwanese Minister of Defense Gu Li-hsiung stated that while different countries have different circumstances, such views can be discussed but need careful consideration and legal basis. The article highlighted Australia's move to address its manpower shortage due to China's ambitions in the region, proposing that Taiwan should consider a similar approach. Gu Li-hsiung discussed the issue during a legislative meeting on military capabilities enhancement and procurement progress but emphasized that it is not currently within his considerations.
