Taiwan Train Accident: Beixi Section Incident Occurs Just 100 Meters from Taroko Express Derailment Site 3 Years Ago, Reveals Reasons why Warning System Not Triggered

Reported 11 months ago

On June 21, 2024, at 8:31 AM, Taiwan Railway's 229 Taroko Express train derailed in the afternoon, resulting in the driver fracturing his bones and 6 passengers sustaining minor injuries, with many passengers having to awkwardly escape in the mud. The incident happened just 100 meters away from the Taroko Express derailment tragedy that occurred on April 2, 2021. The warning system did not alert because the rockfall warning system was set at the East Main Line, while today's mudslide only affected the West Main Line, thus not triggering the brake notification for the train. The affected passengers were transferred to nearby stations, and emergency teams were mobilized for rescue and medical care. This incident raised questions about the effectiveness of the safety measures in place by the Taiwan Railway.
