Taiwan Train Derails After Hitting Landslide, 9 Injured - Loud Noise, 525 Evacuate in Darkness

Due to heavy rain, a landslide occurred on the tracks of the Taiwan Railways Administration's Tze-chiang Express train No. 229 (3000 series) between Chungte and Horen, causing the first, second, and ninth carriages to derail and injuring the driver and eight passengers. Passengers described a terrifying situation when the train suddenly braked and plunged into darkness after hitting the landslide. 525 passengers were evacuated in the dark and mud with some elderly passengers needing to be carried by rescue personnel. Investigations are underway regarding the cause of the accident.
