On June 21, 2024, the Taiwan Railways Administration's Train No. 229 traveling to Hualien derailed between Chongde and Heren after hitting rocks, resulting in 6 injuries. The train's second carriage derailed inside a tunnel, prompting passengers to evacuate in the rain by walking through mud and taking a connecting shuttle to Xincheng Station. The incident occurred during heavy rain, with the Central Weather Bureau issuing a heavy rain warning for 12 counties and cities in Taiwan, including the Hualien mountainous area prone to landslides. The train operator confirmed the derailment at around 4:50 pm, stating that the train stopped inside the tunnel due to the impact, with emergency response teams deployed. The driver and 6 passengers sustained minor injuries, with the driver suffering a bone fracture in his hand.
