Taiwan Train Incident: More than 500 Passengers Escape from Train Derailed in Tunnel After Hit by Falling Rocks

On June 21, 2024, at 6:46 am, a dangerous incident occurred on the Taiwan Railway. The 229th express train traveling northbound through the Qingshui Tunnel collided with falling rocks, causing it to derail and get stuck in the tunnel. Over 500 passengers onboard had to evacuate and take connecting trains to leave the scene. The driver suffered a broken bone, while 6 passengers were injured. The incident was possibly triggered by heavy rainfall leading to mudslides affecting the track. Passengers described a terrifying collision, and injuries were primarily concentrated in the first two train cars. Repeated reports will be provided concerning the aftermath and assistance provided by the authorities.
