Taiwan Tribe in Doulis, Taitung Covered in Stench: Mayor of Chenggong Town Says Odors from Excavating Garbage Sent to Incinerator Met South Wind

Reported 12 months ago

The Doulis tribe in Chenggong Town, Taitung has been enveloped in foul odors recently, with residents pointing fingers at the town hall for continuously transporting garbage to a nearby landfill; Mayor Xie Shuzhen explained that the stench was due to recent excavation of garbage being sent to the incinerator and carried by the south wind towards the tribe, not from new garbage piles. In consideration of the tribe's annual harvest festival, the excavation will be temporarily halted. Concerns arose about the landfill site near the famous 'Sky Mirror' sea view on Taitung's east coast, where two years ago, the tribe protested against the garbage dump being set up near a tourist attraction, leading to a series of protests and eventually the town hall promising to stop garbage entry. Residents and tourists have complained about the overwhelming stench from the landfill, impacting the quality of life in the tribe's residential area.
