A private shrine in Tainan, Taiwan, sparked controversy by announcing a divine marriage involving the sea goddess Mazu and the god Guan Yu, but attorney Lu Qiuyuan warned against treating such events as mere theatrics. Lu emphasized that while deities are compassionate towards all beings, it is people who seek marriages, not gods. Lu also cautioned against maliciously pursuing others and self-proclaiming marriages, which may violate stalking laws. Lu criticized the unauthorized imposition of surnames in marriage practices and distinguished between beliefs and superstitions, using the shrine incident as an example of the dangers of extreme superstitions influencing tragic outcomes.
