On July 7, 2024, at around 10:42 PM, Lin Shijie, the father of Tainan City Councilor Lin Yiting, was shot multiple times at close range in front of his house and later died despite emergency medical efforts. Surveillance footage revealed the gunman waiting in ambush, swiftly approaching Lin and firing multiple shots within 8 seconds before fleeing. The police found at least 9 bullet casings at the scene and suspect premeditation, investigating possible accomplices. The motive may be related to past disputes, such as an alleged threat by Lin Shijie during a previous council election. Lin's daughter succeeded him as a councilor after his failed bid in 2018, while Lin became the chairman of a fisheries association. Investigations are ongoing.
