A couple in Taichung surnamed Wu used the guise of investing in 'energy-saving boilers' to fraudulently collect 4.1 billion NT dollars, enticing 130 investors with monthly interests of 4% over 8 years before being unable to pay out the returns in May. They were subsequently arrested and their ill-gotten gains, including luxury homes and sports cars worth around 200 million NT dollars, were seized. The couple is facing charges of fraud and violating banking laws, with investigations uncovering their elaborate scheme of alluring investors with high monthly returns through a non-existent business venture.
