In Wufeng District, Taichung City, a Taiwanese female master's student in the U.S., named Jiang, and her boyfriend surnamed Zhang, were sentenced to life imprisonment on June 20, 2024, for the murder of Jiang's father with a hammer because he stopped supporting her education fees. Although Jiang's mother and sister requested the death penalty, the Taichung High Court upheld the life imprisonment sentence, citing the potential for rehabilitation and societal reintegration for both individuals. The case may still be appealed to a third trial.
