In June 18, 2024, fishermen in Penghu, Taiwan, have a chance to earn rewards up to 30,000 NTD from the Navy for photographing and reporting sightings of Chinese submarines floating in the Taiwan Strait. Over the past five years, the Navy has approved 39 successful reports and awarded a total of 440,000 NTD in rewards for valuable intelligence information. This initiative has encouraged active participation from fishermen, and local fishing associations have confirmed actual rewards being claimed. The Navy posters at fishing associations urge fishermen to report ship sightings, and the precise details required include location, ship number, and type for eligibility to receive the rewards, especially prioritizing the first reporter of each sighting by a Taiwanese ship captain. The Defense Ministry emphasizes collaboration between the military and civilians to vigilantly safeguard the waters, with reports showing fluctuations in the number of successful reports and rewards over recent years, peaking in 2020.
