In the early hours of June 18, 2024, fishermen in Penghu were shocked to see a submarine surface in the middle of the Taiwan Strait as they were fishing. A Chinese warship arrived shortly after and escorted the submarine towards China. Military enthusiasts speculate that the submarine may be China's upgraded 094 nuclear-powered submarine, capable of carrying up to 12 JL-2 submarine-launched ballistic missiles with a range of 10,000 km. The submarine did not submerge again after the escort, leading to suspicions of a malfunction.
