Taiwanese Fishing Boat Seized in the Common Fishing Grounds Between the Two Sides, Fisheries Agency Changes Its Tune: High-Risk Area

Reported 12 months ago

On July 3, 2024, the Taiwanese fishing boat 'Dajinman 88' from Penghu was intercepted and confiscated by Chinese coastal guard vessels. The Director of the Fisheries Agency, Zhang Zhisheng, initially stated that the incident occurred in an area where joint operations took place over the years. However, the Fisheries Agency later retracted its statement, citing the high-risk nature of the area and reminding fishermen to prioritize safety at sea. The Ministry of Agriculture has requested the Mainland Affairs Council and the Straits Exchange Foundation to negotiate with China for the prompt release of the detained boat and crew, urging Taiwanese fishermen to comply with China's seasonal fishing restrictions. The incident prompted concerns over maritime security and diplomatic relations between Taiwan and China.
