As of July 1, a new regulation by Mainland China's National Security Department allows law enforcement to check individuals' phones under certain conditions. A Taiwanese journalist, who had been resigned for months, was fined over 12,000 New Taiwan Dollars by undercover Hong Kong police for not cooperating during a smoking incident in Hong Kong. Despite explaining he disposed of the cigarette properly, refusing to show his phone led to the penalty. This incident raises concerns over privacy and enforcement of the new rule, possibly impacting future travels to China, Hong Kong, or Macau for individuals like the former journalist.
