Taiwanese-Japanese politician Renho, a former senator aged 56, announced her candidacy for the Tokyo governor election in July, receiving death threats on the 23rd including threats of acid attacks, stabbing, and bomb installations. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police have started an investigation. Renho's campaign office in Tokyo and members of the Constitutional Democratic Party received threats in the morning of the 23rd. The threats included intentions to attack party members with sulfuric acid, to stab Renho, and to detonate a bomb on June 24. Renho has reported the threats and the police are investigating for suspected intimidation. Renho's office posted on social media stating they have reported the case to the police and that ensuring the safety of candidates and supporters participating in public speeches will remain a priority.
