During a legislative committee meeting on Thursday, Taiwan's ruling party Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker Wu Ping-jui withdrew his amendment proposal to the Recall Law due to concerns that the proposed anti-fraud measures might be used as a political tool by the opposition Kuomintang (KMT). The KMT had suggested raising the recall threshold, but the DPP and other parties opposed it, advocating for stricter recall procedures instead. Wu's proposal included requirements for recall initiators and petitioners to provide their ID card 'issuance date' to prevent fraudulent acts, with penalties for misuse. Wu stressed that good legislative amendments should not hinder or block public demands for recall, emphasizing that legislative action should focus on serving the people and democracy, not political self-interest.
