Legislators from the Kuomintang party, including Chen Xue-Sheng and Chen Yu-Zhen, have proposed amending the 'Island Construction Act' to allow Chinese companies to participate in construction projects on outlying islands. Critics, such as Democratic Progressive Party legislator Hong Shen-Han, have raised concerns about these plans, stating that the proposed projects totaling over 700 billion NTD are aimed at relaxing regulations and allowing Chinese firms to enter Taiwan’s construction market, akin to creating a Taiwanese version of the Belt and Road Initiative. They warn of potential financial risks and loss of control over strategic assets. The amendment is set for review in the Legislative Yuan, with opposition from the DPP.
