Taiwanese Mercedes-Benz Tax Evasion Scandal: Former Chairman of Taichung Baojue Temple and Family Embezzle NT$45.23 Million in Incense Money

Reported 7 months ago

The former chairman surnamed Lin and his children from the well-known religious Zen temple Baojue Temple in North District of Taichung City have been caught embezzling NT$45.23 million in public funds, selling temple plaques while evading NT$23.77 million in taxes. The Taichung District Court sentenced them to 3 years and 4 months for embezzlement and tax evasion crimes, with a 4-year probation period. They have the right to appeal after admitting their crimes and returning the embezzled money. The court found that the family used temple funds for personal luxuries like a Mercedes-Benz car and foreign insurances, and fraudulently avoided taxes on temple plaque sales amounting to NT$12.91 million. The family's confession and cooperation with the temple led to a lenient sentence and probation.
