On June 9, a Chinese national drove a speedboat into the Tamsui River in Taiwan, causing concerns about national security. National Security Bureau Director Chai Ming-yan acknowledged that the incident could be a gray-zone aggression by the CCP, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into the motive behind the intrusion. The man, a former naval captain, sought asylum in Taiwan, fearing political persecution after making anti-China government remarks on WeChat. Chai Ming-yan highlighted increased Chinese activities near Taiwanese waters this year, including the opening of the M503 air route, patrols by Chinese official vessels, and drone operations in offshore islet airspace, warning of possible gray-zone provocations. The Director assured that they would thoroughly investigate the man's background and activities in China to strengthen Taiwan’s national security intelligence and response mechanisms for similar incidents. The United States, Japan, and the Philippines are closely monitoring the situation. Huang Pin-ning reporting from Taipei, edited by Zhang Bi-shan.
