In Hualien, Taiwan, the TAR 229 express train was hit by a landslide near Hualien and Ren tunnels, causing three carriages to derail and leaving nine passengers injured. Reports from passengers described a moment of tremendous impact with carriages shaking and a feeling of being thrown into the air. Passengers recalled the chaos inside the dark carriages, the burnt smell, and the challenges of evacuating through mud-covered tunnels. The incident left the driver with a fractured hand and several passengers with injuries, but no fatalities were reported. This marks another unfortunate incident in the region, following previous cancellations due to earthquakes. TAR is managing recovery efforts, offering full refunds to the 525 passengers affected.
