Early in the morning on June 20, 2024, a 29-year-old police officer surnamed Wu in Taitung encountered a rare bird, a Mikado Pheasant, while riding a motorcycle and suffered severe injuries after the collision. Wu lost consciousness and heartbeat at the scene but was revived after being rushed to the hospital. The officer was off-duty and riding a red motorcycle at a high speed when the bird strike caused him to lose balance, resulting in a crash that sent him falling off a small road. The incident is under investigation by the authorities. The area where the accident occurred is known to be a habitat for the Mikado Pheasant, a protected species indigenous to Taiwan.
