Current Chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation and former Mayor of Taoyuan, Cheng Wen-tsan, was suspected of violating the Anti-Corruption Act and subsequently released on bail for 5 million NT dollars with restrictions on residence and travel. Japanese media analyst Yasu Ita believes that the corruption case involving Cheng Wen-tsan may have a short-term impact on the reputation of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), but in the long run, it can demonstrate the DPP's commitment to not protecting wrongdoings. If Cheng is proven guilty, Ita suggests that the DPP will not hesitate to distance itself from him, in contrast to opposition parties who may tolerate criminal backgrounds in important positions. Ita also expressed concerns about the case shifting focus from legislative issues and potentially allowing anti-democratic bills to pass unnoticed. He emphasized the importance of combating corruption while safeguarding democracy and freedom.
