Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te's Constitutional Move Sparking Controversy

Reported 11 months ago

In a legislative session on June 21, the Kuomintang and People First Party in the Taiwanese parliament jointly rejected the parliamentary reform bill with a vote of 62 to 51. President Lai Ching-te announced on June 24 that he would file a constitutional interpretation case and seek temporary measures, warning opposition parties not to act hastily before the result. Former legislator Guo Zheng-liang criticized Lai Ching-te's move as implying the constitutional interpretation would pass and condemned his 'poor taste.' Lai Ching-te argued that recent amendments to laws violated the Constitution's power separation and oversight provisions and signed them into law, pledging to protect the constitutional order by petitioning the constitutional court for interpretation and temporary measures.
