Taiwanese Private Shrine Faces Backlash over Controversial Marriage Poster, Facebook Page Shut Down

Reported 11 months ago

A private shrine in Tainan, Taiwan, 'Tainan Yuzhi Wuxuantan,' caused controversy by releasing a marriage poster featuring their deity Wen Heng Sheng Di (Guandi) and the deity from 'North Shanwei Lu'er Men Tianhou Palace,' Mazu, who was addressed as 'Heavenly Guan Shengmu' on the poster. This led to backlash from followers, with the shrine's Facebook page eventually being temporarily closed due to negative comments. The incident sparked tensions between the shrine and the Tianhou Palace during a visit, with arguments and physical altercations occurring. The Palace later issued a statement condemning the shrine's actions, emphasizing the simplicity and purity of Mazu worship and rejecting the misleading use of religious beliefs for private shrine activities.
