Current Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike announced her candidacy for a third term with hopes of reelection, while Taiwanese-born Renho, a member of the Constitutional Democratic Party in Japan, submitted her resignation to run as an independent candidate for Tokyo Governor in order to gain more voter support. The Tokyo Governor election will be held on July 7th, with Koike emphasizing her achievements and dedication during her two terms amidst challenges like COVID-19 and hosting the Tokyo Olympics. Renho, at 56 years old, will run with the slogan 'Against LDP politics, Anti-Koike administration' and has the support of opposition parties. She plans to announce her election platform next week.
