The Taiwanese representative in the US, Yu Da-hsuan, is embroiled in controversy over lavish spending of public funds, including buying expensive furniture for the official residence, daily consumables like toilet paper and toothpaste, and attempting to replace the official car with a luxury vehicle. When lawmakers requested information on the expenses, the Foreign Ministry marked the documents as 'classified,' citing concerns over potential Chinese interference in Taiwan's resource allocation if details were made public. The representative denied the accusations, stating the purchases were for the country's image and status. The Foreign Ministry clarified that while the total budget for Taiwan's overseas missions is public, specific expenditure details are sensitive and kept confidential to prevent China from influencing Taiwan's international standing. Additionally, Yu's request to purchase a million-dollar Cadillac was rejected by the ministry due to excessive cost and engine size.
