On June 27, 2024, it was reported that the Japanese Kobayashi Pharmaceuticals' red yeast rice health supplements had caused kidney damage issues, resulting in 5 deaths in Japan and 68 adverse reaction reports in Taiwan. Over 30 affected individuals in Taiwan have sought compensation through a class action lawsuit, with each seeking between 300,000 to 500,000 NTD. Consumers experienced abnormal kidney filtration rates and chronic kidney disease after consuming the product, with the company only offering refunds and no concrete solution provided. The Taiwanese Consumer Protection Association is assisting the victims in this case.
