Taiwanese Shrine Faces Backlash for Controversial Poster of Deity Marriage, Temporarily Shuts Down Social Media Page

Reported 11 months ago

After Taiwanese private shrine 'Yujimo Wuxuan Shrine' posted a controversial poster of the marriage between General Guan and Mazu with Mazu being crowned 'Madam Guan' instead, causing dissatisfaction among worshippers, the shrine closed its Facebook page temporarily due to public backlash. Despite the shrine's visit to Luerhmen Tainan Temple with deity statues honoring the marriage, conflict arose when a temple attendant requested the removal of decorative balls on the sedan chair, leading to a verbal dispute. Displeased netizens criticized the shrine online for 'misusing divine intentions,' prompting the shutdown of the shrine's social media page. Luerhmen Tainan Temple responded to the situation saying religious worship should be based on pure belief, denouncing the shrine's unauthorized sharing of information which caused serious distress to the temple. The temple emphasized the simplicity of Mazu's beliefs and warned against using religious texts to mislead believers, issuing a strict condemnation of the shrine's actions.
