Taiwanese Tradition Resurfaces: Centuries-Old Well Reopened After Half a Century

Reported about 1 year ago

In Pingtung County, Taiwan, an event called '立蛋' commemorating the Dragon Boat Festival involved not only standing eggs but also local fruits, with participants waiting nearly 20 minutes for the eggs to balance. Meanwhile, in Tainan's Banqiao district, a century-old well that had been sealed for over 50 years was reopened on the festival's day, drawing people to collect water believed to possess special properties. This tradition of seeking good luck and collecting '午時水' extends beyond Tainan to places like Tai'an, Da Jia in Taichung, and Longjing in Yunlin, where people queue with containers to fetch the noon water, often for blessings, protection, and prosperity.
