On June 25, 2024, a Taiwanese woman traveling to Palau for sightseeing and diving was subjected to a full-body check including her intimate areas by Palau customs officers upon arrival at the airport, causing her humiliation and tears. The Taiwan Embassy in Palau promptly responded by sending staff to assist the woman and communicating with Palau authorities. The incident was reportedly a result of heightened customs inspections following a previous case involving a Chinese woman attempting to smuggle drugs in her intimate areas in May, leading to increased scrutiny. Taiwanese citizens traveling in Palau were advised to contact the Taiwan Embassy if faced with emergencies or unequal treatment.
