Taoyuan Mayor Zhang Shan-zheng chaired a municipal meeting on the morning of June 19, 2024, to review the results of the promotion and implementation of water safety in the city. With the increasing frequency of students engaging in water activities due to the hot weather and upcoming summer vacation, officials emphasized the need to enhance water safety awareness and swimming safety measures to reduce the chances of accidents. Various departments such as the Education Bureau, Tourism Bureau, Civil Affairs Bureau, and Fire Department presented reports and suggestions on strengthening safety measures, including education, public-private partnerships, and improving rescue responses at popular water spots. In the past decade, Taoyuan has seen 81 water accidents resulting in 67 deaths, 32 injuries, and one missing person, mainly in ponds, fish ponds, rivers, and creeks. Measures such as setting up safety facilities, increasing public awareness, and enhancing rescue capabilities have been introduced to prevent future tragedies. Education institutions are also focusing on educating students on water safety, swimming skills, and self-rescue mechanisms, while encouraging parents to be vigilant during outings and choose safe swimming locations. Collaboration between local accommodations, campsites, and the Tourism Bureau aims to promote water safety concepts and provide incentives for safe water activities. Authorities are working on improving and maintaining safety facilities at numerous ponds in Taoyuan to prevent drowning incidents and increase community awareness about water risks.
