Taste of Beer 3000 Years Ago: US Amateur Brewer Recreates Ancient Egyptian Recipe

Reported 8 months ago

A hobbyist brewer in Utah, USA, recreated a beer with fruity and sour notes using rare fig varieties and yeast strains dating back to 850 BC based on a traditional Ancient Egyptian recipe, believing it closely resembles the drink pharaoh Ramesses the Great consumed over 3000 years ago. The brewer, Dylan McDonnell, was inspired during the COVID-19 pandemic to experiment with ancient brewing techniques. The beer, named 'Sinai Sour,' incorporates ingredients like desert dates, Yemeni Sidr honey, Sycamore Fig, Israeli golden raisins, frankincense, acacia, and an ancient barley variety, demonstrating a revival of historical brewing practices in modern times.
