U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm revealed that the Biden administration is engaging in talks with tech giants to invest in eco-friendly power production to address the significant increase in electricity consumption resulting from power-hungry data centers driven by technological advancements. Discussions involve the potential collaboration with small modular nuclear reactors to ensure clean baseload power for data companies, with a focus on the need for clear power offtake agreements for nuclear projects. The White House is also pushing for the development of new U.S. nuclear power plants to combat climate change, given the escalating power demand from data centers could reach 9% of total U.S. electricity by 2030.
