Ten Elderly Dies in Uruguay Nursing Home Fire

Reported about 1 year ago

According to the Uruguayan National Fire Department, a fire broke out at a nursing home on July 7, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of 10 elderly residents. The nursing home, located about 290 kilometers northeast of Montevideo, had six rooms and the fire is believed to have started in the living room. While the cause of the fire is still unknown, authorities are investigating the incident. Despite firefighting efforts, seven residents died on the spot, and three others succumbed to smoke inhalation after being taken to a nearby hospital. This incident follows a similar one in Uruguay's Melo city ten days prior, highlighting the urgent need for authorities to address the safety of nursing facilities in a country where 16% of the 3.4 million residents are aged 65 and above.
